Inspired by Kerry James Marshall 1980 piece, A Portrait of the Artist as a Shadow of His Former Self.
When I made this piece I was not feeling my best. I was feeling low and did not feel like smiling at all. This was my interpretation of smiling but sad at the same time…. Asking myself… what you smiling at Happy Nigga, ain't shit sweet. But I keep Smiling and continue to push through the negativity.
